The two traditional giants squared off on match-day five of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, and Ambrose Kirya scored the only goal of the game as Sports Club Villa beat Express FC 1-0 in the first Kampala derby of the season at the Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.
Express started the game on fire following Hamdan’s 4th minute cross into Villa’s area, but unfortunately, there was no teammate to convert the delivery.
Emmanuel (Villa) responded with an attempt in the 8th minute, but the effort from outside the box went inches wide of the post.
In the 22nd minute, Shabena (Express) went for the spectacular from outside the box, but his strike was off target. The two sides continued pressing, but none saw the other’s net in the first 45 minutes.
The first half was tough for the attacking players, but there were more 45 minutes to put that right.
In the 52nd minute, Mutanda (Villa) was presented with a scoring opportunity a few yards from the goal, but he failed to curl it into the back of the net.
It was in the 71st minute that Ambrose Kirya met a cross from Derrick Ndahiro, and he made no mistake. He planted his header into the back of the net to give the Jogoos the lead (1-0) in the Kampala Derby.
Lwanga (Villa) turned from 30 yards and decided to bang one. It was a quality strike but just had too much gas on it. It sailed a few yards over the crossbar. That was in the 79th minute.
The match ended 1-0.
