Uganda Christian University’s goalkeeper and captain Derrick Were has been named the Most Valuable Player in the recently concluded university football league.`
This was during the awards gala held at Kati Kati Hotel in Kampala.
UCU’s skipper Derrick Were led by example as his side won this year’s university football league.
Were’s heroics in between the sticks for the Mukono based side did not only get him the trophy but also three individual awards as the best player for his university, best goalkeeper, and MVP of the tournament.
The shot-stopper left 1.1 million Uganda shillings richer. He got 500,000 for best goalkeeper, MVP, and 100,000 for best player for his institution.
Were’s teammate Kaye Kizito won the top scorer’s boot, Bugema’s Gift Fred was named best defender, while his coach Nyanzi Medhi was named the best team coach of the tournament among other prizes.
UCU beat St. Lawrence University 2-1 in the final to win their first title earning them 4 million Uganda shillings, while the runners up settled for 1 million.
