Aciru, Chrispa make qualifying grade at fourth trials

Aciru Knight, and Chirop Rispa hit qualifying times marks for Africa Senior Athletics Championships as athletes made strides at the fourth Uganda Athletics Federation trials at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole on Saturday. 

The event was also lightened up by appearances from World 800m Champion and Bronze Medalist at the World Indoors over the same distance, Nakaayi Halima, Okot Benson and Chebrus Ali.

Running the 1500m to test her endurance levels, Halima’s winning time of 4:12.67 spurred Aciru Knight third place of 4:14.86 to enter her name on the provisional list of qualifiers for the Africa Seniors, which had eluded her from previous attempts in Namboole.

Chemusto Janat in second position, posted 4:13.46 while Chemutai Belinda 4:15.59, who had already qualified, registered seasonal best times.

Meanwhile Okot Benson based in Kenya but running for home District Agago posted the fastest times in the 100m (10.42) and 200m (20.96) at Namboole this season.

Adome Pius and Lomuthu Rajab followed with 10.60 and 10.80 in the 100m. In the 200m Pius was second with 21.54 while Jagalo Joshua was third with 21.74

National Cross-Country champion and winner Source of the Nile Half Marathon 2022, kick started his track season in the 10,000m where he came second with a time of 28:44.8 behind Uganda Police rising star, Boshi Silas 28.44.4.

However, their times were about six seconds off the qualification mark for the Africa seniors which is capped at 28:38.00.

Nyamuhunge Jacent, Shida Leni, Halima Nakaayi, Chemusto Janat and Chemutai Belinda consolidate their qualification for Africa while Cherop Rispa and Ajok Dorcus hit qualification for Africa in 5,000m.

Among the men Okot Benson and Adoli Haron consolidate their positions for Africa, meanwhile Yeko Dismus, Kibet Rodger, Rotich Martin Magengo, Kiplangat Denis and Kiprop Kenneth are good for 3000m as Rotich Gideon for 3000m Steeple Chase, World U-20.

The next trial will take place on 30th April 2022 in Mandela Stadium, Namboole.
