Telecommunications giants MTN have continued to expand their horizon in Ugandan sport after acquiring the naming rights of KCCA FC’s home ground in Lugogo.
For the next 10 years, the former StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo will be called the MTN Omondi Stadium in a deal whose financial terms were not disclosed.
According to MTN Uganda’s Chief Marketing Officer Somdev Sen, their focus during the period of this partnership is to help the club in redeveloping it to their desired status.
“As MTN, we are here to create a stadium, called MTN Omondi stadium. And help to make it a state of the Art facility,” Sen Said.
He adds that the legacy of the club’s legend Phillip Omondi also needed to be upheld hence the decision to rename it after him.
KCCA FC’s Chief Executive Officer Anisha Muhoozi explained that they mutually agreed to terminate the contract of the former naming rights holders StarTimes.
‘We mutually agreed with StarTimes to terminate stadium naming rights but StarTimes remains our Kit sponsor,” Muhoozi said.
To club Patron Erias Lukwago, the telecommunications giants add great value to the club.
“This partnership is focusing more on value addition to each entity rather than quantifying to monitory value. MTN and KCCA FC are big brands and we hope to benefit from each other,” Lukwago Said.
The telecommunications behemoth has been hugely involved in supporting Ugandan sports having previously been main sponsors of the national football team the Cranes, partnered with Sanyuka Television in the promotion of Ugandan football talent on top of several other major sponsorships to sport.
